We all possess the unique ability to think about our thoughts. That's why tilt can be a valuable teacher, if we're willing to listen. (Check out Part 1 on what tilt is and Part 2 on how it emerges.)
Tilt, or overreacting, often is a sign of something deeper—discomfort, being overwhelmed, or unmet expectations. By identifying what sets you off and digging deeper and by asking 'why,’ you can uncover the root cause—usually pointing to unresolved issues.
Whenever I had an unreasonable reaction to logic, I would ask myself:
Why am I reacting this way?
How do I feel in this moment?
How am I handling it?
What am I trying to escape??
It reminds me of a sticky note I use to keep on my bathroom mirror that read:
Challenges make life interesting
Overcoming them makes life meaningful
That’s a great quote. It truly is what life is about. We will always face challenges and it’s how we approach these challenges that constitute our own life force. It reminds me of a great Billie Jean King quote. “Pressure is a privilege.”
This right here is the reason mindfulness is and remains a practice, because whoa, does it take practice
